I didn't think you could leave that quest until you had finished it -is that right? If you lose one of the combats you have a page to turn to

You're correct, when you lose a battle you are directed to turn to a different entry instead of the quest map. However, once you get to the very end of the quest and the (alternative) count fight, it is a do or die battle so technically you do have the option of returning to the quest map if you suffered a defeat. However, you don't get your missing items returned to you.
