Sear only adds a +1 to dice rolled for a 'damage score' (i.e. when you add magic/brawn). Cleave you roll a damage die (so you don't add magic/brawn) therefore, sear does not get activated.
Thorns is a passive - so isn't a damage score roll. You only add brawn/magic to a damage score.
